Timbaland Ringtones
Timbaland, who was born Timothy Z. Mosley, has successfully conquered the rap industry as one of its most prolific and creative producers, contributing to hits by Ginuwine, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Aaliyah, Bubba Sparxxx, and most famously Missy Elliott. Tons of people give credit to Timbaland for redefining hip hop, because of his general influence and because of the number of number-one hits Timbaland has created. Timbaland’s incredible work ethic is certainly a big reason for his success, but in addition to that he’s been able to create inventive new sounds and beats that consistently keep people guessing what’s next.
Timbaland grew up in Norfolk, VA – and this is where Timbaland hooked up with his future partner in sound, Missy Elliott. After Timbaland and Elliott worked together on some songs they opted to relocate to NYC with Mr. Melvin Barcliff, who would become Magoo in ‘Timbaland & Magoo’ – the legendary production team. Timbaland’s first breakout was with Ginuwine, and after a couple years, his career was advancing swiftly, creating beats and hits for a never-ending array of pop, R&B, and rap artists.
Nowadays, a song produced by Timbaland is pretty much guaranteed a top position on the Billboard charts. Timbaland allegedly charges thousands upon thousands of dollars to produce a track – as mentioned on the song ‘Give It To Me’ featuring Nelly Furtado. Timbaland says: “I get a half a mil' for my beats, you get a couple grand.”
Reviews of Timbaland’s recent work have this to say:
About.com – 2 Stars
The About.com review said, “Timbaland is not just any ol' hip-hop & R&B music producer, he's a bonafide legend accredited for berthing one of the most distinctive sounds in the genre of hip-hop.” However, About.com said that Timbaland disappointed listeners with his foray into ‘Rock’ music, and said that that ‘Timbaland Presents Shock Value’ is an “an overall disappointing effort and essentially an assortment of tracks that'll go through one ear and out the other.”
AllMusic.com – 2.5 Stars
AllMusic.com said that the ‘reigning producer of R&B and rap since 1996’ has created a highly anticipated album. However, AllMusic.com, too, was disappointed by Timbaland’s latest album, again due to the rock elements. Ultimately, AllMusic.com wished that ‘Timbaland Presents Shock Value’ had more club bangers like ‘Give It To Me’ to equal out the tracklist.
OkayPlayer.com – 3.5 Stars
OkayPlayer wrote that “Shock Value is at its best when Timbaland works with seemingly different artists and still manages to formulate classic-sounding-Timbaland.” Unfortunately, OkayPlayer thought that Shock Value too often sounds ‘formulaic’ – suggesting that ‘Give It To Me’ and ‘Release’ were really “rehashing” earlier work. Overally, OkayPlayer thought that Shock Value was not as innovative as Timbaland’s earlier works.
Pitchfork – 4.1 (out of 10)
Like the other reviewers, Pitchfork thought that ‘Shock Value’ didn’t live up to Timbaland’s former greatness. They wrote: “It's just that it's disconcerting sometimes to be confronted with an entire album's worth of evidence that geniuses can fuck up, just like everyone else.”
In terms of other reviews, Prefix Mag gave ‘Shock Value’ a 6 out of 10, PopMatters gave it a 6 out of 10, and Rolling Stone gave it a 3 out of 5.
