Hart Fisher has an imprint known as Boneyard Press. It's somewhat of a joke in the comics industry -- this guy is bitching his face off about not being listed in comic price guides, for example. That's how important his company is. He, and his company, made a few splashes in their days -- mostly due to controversy. And when Gerard Way was a teenager, Boneyard Press printed some of his earliest comic book work.

 

With that out of the way....

 

Hart has a few complaints. His biggest one seems to be his notion that Dark Horse claims "The Umbrella Academy" is Gerard Way's first comic book. He somehow believes that this "false advertising" would artificially inflate sales. His logic is incredibly skewed, as anyone who reads his disjointed LiveJournal post can see this is not someone who is thinking clearly.

 

Elsewhere, however, Hart really turned up the heat, saying:

[He's] ripping off my old message and many of my actual written bits. I'm in the process now of going through the lyrics and matching up where he has straight up ripped me off from my old editorials.

Really? All of a sudden, this is what he has to do? I"d like to return to his LiveJournal, which reads like sour grapes about Gerard and Dark Horse's success with "The Umbrella Academy." Whether or not this was Gerard's first comic book, it wouldn't matter -- it would have sold to My Chemical Romance fans, either way. It also would have found the audience with comic book fans that it did, simply because it's a really good book.

 

And as for Hart's complaints about who really published Gerard Way's first work? Since I don't think Dark Horse really cares, either way, why doesn't he get the smug self-satisfaction, and simply re-print "On Raven's Wings"? There's definitely a demand for it -- even if it is just amongst My Chemical Romance fans. He could prove his point, whatever it is, and make some money off a 14-year-old book.

 

I find it hard to believe that anything will come of any of this -- the guy comes across as a bitter man who is trying to get a piece of the action. As for the plagiarism accusations? Well, let's just see what he comes up with when he's done searching his old editorials. I'm sure he wrote extensively about the subjects Gerard Way did while publishing comics that can't even get recognized by the comic buyer's guide. By the way, who uses LiveJournal to make their serious statements to the press? I'm not terribly impressed. [Everyone knows you use MySpace to make your serious statements. Geez.]

So much so, that I have amended plans and will be going to Philadelphia, because I hate arena shows. But I was kind of touched by Mikey Way's message concerning the announcement of the final show of the tour, which will be held at Madison Square Garden:

Hello to our dear fans
We are pleased to announce a show at NYCs one and only, Madison Square Garden. I know that its not a special small club show like the others on the tour coming up through the US. MSG holds a special place in our hearts. About 12 years back, my big brother took me to see The Smashing Pumpkins at that very venue. I turned to him and said "this is what I want to be...this is what we have to do...one day we are going to be on that stage." He felt and thought the exact same thing. Low and behold..here we are announcing the show of all of our dreams. We wanted to share this special night with all of our hometown area fans. This is a great goodbye to "the Black Parade" tour and the beginning of the next chapter in MCR. Not only that, but we get to share it with our best friends in the world, Taking Back Sunday and Drive By. We can only hope that one or a few of you will feel the same thing at the show and a decade later, be on that stage.

First, it's cute because Mikey isn't usually the one talking for the band. And it really is nice to see him talking about how he's finally able to live out a life-long dream and all of that. But all told? I'm still going to head a few hours out of state for a smaller venue because that's the sort of girl I am.

While Gerard was discussing Britney Spears with some random member of the press, he declared her his "heroine," and then said he has "had a lot of moments where [he] could identify with her." Naturally. Further, he said he thought she looked great with her shaved head, which is baffling, but does explain his ex-fiancee, Liza Cuts... he has terrible taste in women. But then again, he did marry the super-hot Lyn-Z, so who knows? Again... Gerard Way.

 

And then, he outdid himself when he threw this one out for the world:

"Sometimes you just wanna shave your head and be covered in your own shit, running through the streets, being crazy. You wanna be fucking locked up!

Ummm, actually? No, I don't want to do any of that. Not in the slightest. And Gerard should suppress any urges to shave his head, because it might actually cause me to die of a broken heart. As for the rest, I could be a bit more forgiving, but I honestly don't think most people ever want to be covered in their own shit, and if they have any sense, being locked up is a pretty scary thought.

Fans at the show reported that Gerard said he had to fly home due to "personal reasons and issues," but said he would be back, even though they were all thinking of him. What, exactly is going on remains unknown, and it's probably better that way. There's rampant fandom speculation, as is always the case... but the good thing is it doesn't seem to be his health.


Meanwhile, due to his wrist injuries, Bob Bryar is also not playing with the band. According to Bob, he played the late October Hoboken, NJ show with his wrists in incredible pain, and against doctor's advice, went on to play the two opening shows for Bon Jovi before having to accept that he needed time off. Hence, why the band controversially cancelled their Maine show.

 

While we all joke "is My Chemical Romance cursed?" this does make me wonder:

 

Are we, the fans, destroying our bands? Do we expect too much from them?

 

This year alone, I saw My Chemical Romance twice, in February and October. And I'm bumming that I didn't make it to more shows. I suppose I could have, too, since they never stopped touring. There is no way this does not take a massive physical, as well as mental, toll on the band. On any band.

 

How many bands left tours this year, only to officially break up weeks or even days later? How many of these bands were scheduled for weeks on end with no days off? Or maybe a single day of downtime in Akron, Ohio? They're not seeing their families or friends, they're sleeping on buses or in vans -- with the smaller bands doing what they can to not get their stuff stolen, as that's a stressful epidemic right now. They're eating what they can.

 

And while most of the bands I have ever talked to say they love being on the road and meeting the kids, playing their songs, all of that... it's not quite natural to have people working virtually non-stop for months at a time. The travel with overnight drives, lugging gear around, dodging crazy fans... the stress is incomprehensible.

 

And of course, we want to see the bands. And they want us to see them. They want to make us happy. I know I get petulant when I see west coast only tours for bands I like, or want to see bands over and over, so I'm sure as hell guilty of exactly what I am talking about. If someone told me I could buy tickets for My Chemical Romance today? Despite thinking they need and deserve time off, I'd buy those tickets, go to the show, and angle myself into the best position possible once the show happened.

 

I'm not sure that there's an answer, or even as much of a problem as I've laid out here. After all, the guys in these bands are all adults and old enough to say, "hey, I kind of need a few weeks off." It's still hard to hear one of your favorite bands is having such a hard time.

 

Either way, here's hoping for a speedy recovery for Bob and that whatever is going on with Frank isn't serious.
