Kanye's Mother Passes Away

Sad news to start off the week.

Kanye West's mom Donda passed away on Saturday night in Los Angeles. The cause of death is still unknown.

With the massive success of his Graduation album, Kanye had been having a great 2007 thus far. Funny how quickly things can change. Our condolences to Kanye and his family. But you know what they say, n-n-now th-that that don't kill me, can only make me stronger.

[UPDATE: RollingStone reports that the death was a result of "complications from a cosmetic surgical procedure."]

Kanye West is writing a book. Actually, the book is being co-written by J. Sakiya Sandifer, and I'm 98% sure that Kanye won't write more than the intro.

Kanye describes the book as "an entertaining volume of ‘Kanye-isms' - the creative, humorous and insightful philosophies and anecdotes used in creating my path to success."

Gucci's most vocal advocate, Kanye West is all giddy about his future plans - working on a track with Michael Jackson - and so are we. Even though Justice is attempting to fill a bit of the void during MJ's absence, his return to making perfect pop tunes is long overdue. I guess fondling children does have a way of gobbling up all your free time. Or maybe he's too busy with fake marriages (get it together, man).

The most exciting part is Kanye's recent track record. If he's half as on fire while working with MJ as he has been the past six months, it's going to be a wonderful return to Michael Jackson domination and hopefully less ... uh ... you know, fondling.

So Kanye finally made his SNL performance debut this weekend and it was mostly something fierce. He swallowed his pride, like he did the last time he parodied himself, for a skit making fun of his child-like awards show behavior. It was funny.

Kanye also turned in a seriously excited couple of verses during "Stronger" and headed straight into "Good Life." I hung in there through the first half of "Champion," which was strong but the freestyled ending got a little awkward at times. Dude sort of lost me with, "the blogs, the blogs, yo, they try to diss me / but they cannot see I'm on sat-ur-day night gettt-in' bus-y."

Despite having sports star LeBron James as a host, last night's Saturday Night Live was primarily a musical affair. Kanye West, hip hop's primary egoist, was the musical guest. We also got a "Digital Short" cameo from Maroon 5's Adam Levine.

In addition to giving some impressive performances, Kanye participated in a skit where he mocked his notorious award show etiquette. Links after the jump.

Kanye West's Mom Compares Him to Jesus

Just when you thought Kanye West's ego couldn't get any bigger, his mom shows up and outdoes him. Ye's mom, Donde West (wait, do their names rhyme?) talked to an intern at the Baltimore Sun and had some, eh, questionable things to say when asked about Ye's career.

"He touches the people. You never know how words can save a person's life, physically or otherwise. People like Martin Luther King or Mahatma Gandhi or, in my view, Barack Obama, or Jesus Christ - people whose job it is to tell the truth - I see that in Kanye. Now, people like you are gonna go, 'Oh, Kanye's mom said he's like Jesus!' but ... when you have a gift, you didn't get it by yourself. ... Your truth is your truth," Donde said.

I'm submitting this family to a review by the Illinois Psychiatric Society for illusions of grandeur.

SNL is about to begin its 33rd season and they'll be kicking it correct with Kanye West joining host LeBron James in the first episode. Here's holding out for a Kanye vs. 50 Cent parody featuring Kenan Thompson in 50's spot. I bet it won't happen but I know it should.

After the first episode, SNL will bring on musical guests Spoon, Foo Fighters and Bon Jovi. In fact, Bon Jovi frontman Jon Bon Jovi will host the episode featuring the Foo Fighters' music. I wonder if they'll do any energy drink skits. That's my Jovi.
