Jay-Z: American Gangster, Cosmetics Mogul

Jay-Z, fresh off the release of his American Gangster album, is working with the cosmetics company Elizabeth Arden to launch a line of beauty products. He just couldn't let Diddy have all the glory, could he?

A source says:

It is a really cool time for Jay-Z working with Elizabeth Arden and he is delighted about it.

You know, if Jay-Z wasn't dating Beyonce... Anyway, I'm pretty sure of two things:

1) This story will break the record for "no homo" comments in Internet forums.

2) Like all of Jay-Z's other ventures, he's going to make a ton of money off this.

This is one thing I envy about the hood mentality. No matter what you're doing, as long as you're making money, people admire you. Doesn't matter if you're selling crack or launching a tampon line; as long as you're getting paid, it's all good. Jay-Z, who already has $50 billion in the bank, produces a cosmetics line, and everyone is like, "yeah, you get that paper, Jigga!" Meanwhile, people in the suburbs are always complaining about "selling out." Yep, hood life has its perks. Actually, no, it just has that one perk. The rest is terrible.

(Sidenote: I've never actually been to the hood, so my research is based on Ice Cube movies.)

In less meterosexual news, Jay-Z's new album is streaming online. If you look hard enough, you'll find it. I've only listened a couple times, but it's pretty good.

In a new interview, Jay-Z has admitted that he regrets his 5-minute retirement.

After 2003's Black Album, Jay announced that he would be retiring from rap, only to come back in 2006 with a new record, a mediocre Wreckx-n-Effect sample, and eight million Budweiser commercials.

Not that I'm down on the man, but I had started to lose a bit of faith in Jay-Z lately. You saw (what turned out to be) the trailer for his and Pharrell's "Blue Magic," but yesterday they released the official Hype Williams-directed video. The first half is all lights and cars. The second half is ... the morning after? and rainbow-colored skull paintings?

It definitely sounds half-of-Neptunes-ish seeing as how Pharrell went at the production alone. But Jay sounds downright reflective on this song. That inspiration he talked about seems pretty clear when he says, "Blame Reagan for makin' me into a monster / Blame Oliver North and Iran Contra / I ran contraband that they sponsored."

Tracey Waples, Senior VP of Marketing for Def Jam, says the label originally wanted Jay to create the official soundtrack to American Gangster. Star of the film, Denzel Washington apparently pushed for that to happen but eventually the idea was shot down by the movie's producers, who opted instead for an album inspired by the movie.

Rather than "Blue Magic," Jay-Z will be looking at some red tape leftover from the weekend after a man was stabbed in the eye Saturday night at Jay's Manhattan venue, the 40/40 Club. Good luck with that club business, businessman.

A 30-year-old man named Neville Dangou was arrested, charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He apparently stabbed Christopher Harris, a 26-year-old off-duty corrections academy cadet.
