Call it a royal progress: starting in Dallas on Sept. 29, the Queen will be touring throughout the US to promote her upcoming album, Trav’lin’ Light. The CD, which will be released on Sept. 25, continues the jazz/blues/soul trajectory she launched through The Dana Owens Album; Light features standards by such greats as Sarah Vaughn, Peggy Lee, Smokey Robinson, and Nina Simone.

Despite her continued interest in the sounds of yesteryear, Latifah is planning a throwback of sorts to her own career’s beginnings: "I'd love to make another rap album," declared the actress-musician. "I have some music I've already been working on. But everything has to have its proper place; I don't really want to drop the rap album while (Trav'lin' Light) is out. I really want to respect every genre for what it is, and I'd prefer to record a rap album and be out there promoting it."

With her fingers in a number of different fields as actress, musical performer, singer, and rapper, Latifah has won herself a broad fan base. This versatility and universal appeal may well have made Queen Latifah the people’s princess.
