After over ten years with the band, Steve Hewitt has decided to part ways with Placebo. The split is said to be amicable and the result of the band members growing apart, but I still couldn't help but let out a "whoah" when I discovered this news. Brian and Stefan will continue on with the band -- and are even planning their next album -- though they have said they are in "no hurry" to find a replacement for Steve.

That is definitely not news I was expecting to report today.
Brain Molko explained the situation on the band's official site:
Being in a band is very much like being in a marriage, and in couples - in this case a triple - people can grow apart over the years. To say that you don't love your partner anymore is inaccurate, considering all that you've been through and achieved together. There simply comes a point when you realize that you want different things from your relationship and that you can no longer live under the same roof, so to speak.
He speaks words of wisdom, but it's still a pretty big surprise to know the next time the band comes around, someone else will be sitting behind the drum kit.
I guess it could be worse; at least the band is carrying on....
