Of Montreal played Studio B on Saturday in an event put on by New York Magazine. They did an original set and played as a backing band for karaoke songs sung by fans (and a couple guests). It was awesome and Shoutmouth was there.
Original Set
Certainly, the karaoke was great fun, but Of Montreal's original set was the highlight of the night. Hissing Fauna translates live excellently (as does much of the previous album, The Sunlandic Twins) and Kevin Barnes is a consummate showman. Wearing makeup and a wild shirt, Barnes was backed by an equally extroverted band -- decked out in angel costumes and reflective gear. The band, that has next to nothing to do with the recording process, is extremely capable and they got the New York crowd dancing -- an increasingly rare feat.
The venue was stand-out and I would recommend seeing them in a small theater if possible (I caught them at Lollapalooza last year and it was disappointing). They pulled a 180 on Saturday and Barnes proved what all the fuss is about. He's humble, shook my hand after the show, and, most importantly, keeps it ultra weird.

Karaoke Set
This is where it got wild. The drinks were flowing, the feet were moving, and the crowd was singing. Most of the people that were lucky enough to get up onstage were confident and well-versed, including a few celebrity guests. From Boston to Bowie and Spinal Tap to The VU, the covers kept coming and Of Montreal nailed the tunes.
Throughout the audience, I kept overhearing the same thing: "I can't believe they're doing this. How cool are they?" I couldn't believe they were, either, but to answer the question, they are very, very cool.
