The Academy Award-winning director will take on the life of the Beatle, who passed away in 2001. The documentary is set to begin production this year, but will take several years to complete.

Olivia Harrison, George's widow, was quoted as saying, "It would have given George great joy to know that Martin Scorsese has agreed to tell his story."

'Tis true that he's a good choice; this is not his first foray into music: Scorsese directed The Last Waltz (The Band's last concert), No Direction Home (about Bob Dylan), and Shine a Light (The Rolling Stones ). The Stones film is scheduled for release in April of 2008.

Scorsese, himself, says of the project, "George Harrison's music and his search for spiritual meaning is a story that still resonates today and I'm looking forward to delving deeper."
