Just a quick update on a topic covered earlier: the condom ringtone.
Apparently the condom ringtone, which can be found at condomcondom.org, has gotten over 270,000 downloads. Thats a huge number of downloads for such a ridiculous ringtone. If you check out the site you'll notice that the sound is barely comprehensible and therefore only going to make a mild impression of the people around you when your phone rings. (Or it could be that its hard for me to understand because English is my first language and I don't speak any Indian at all and the accent makes it less effective to my ears)
I'm not against the attempt to make people more aware of the health risks of going without, I'm just confused about how this is really going to work. Maybe its because I grew up in a different country I don't understand, but is the word itself taboo over there? And if so, who do they think will acutally make it their ringtone? Is this geared toward adults? Would adults really have such a silly ringtone?
Too many questions and not enough care to find out the answers....
The funny thing is that its actually a PC download, so there's no telling how many of the 270K put the ringtone on the phone or how many are actually using it as a ringtone now that it's there. Also, consider the possibility of international traffic and you have what amounts to very few actual Indian people with the condom ringtone. Sounds to me like the other tactics the site has used thus far would be a better focus than pushing this ringtone.
At any rate good luck to them. Maybe next this group can come to the US and help us fight our backwards priorities by giving us a ringtone that sings "Violence in the media is worse than sex in the media". One can only hope.
