In a somewhat surprising announcement, Morrissey has officially stated he'll be heading into the studio before the end of the year. His current tour [which includes New York and Los Angeles residencies] ends on November 8th, and after that, he's off to the studio. "It's absolutely written and completely ready," said the singer in a recent interview.

As for how the album will be released, the singer has been tight-lipped. He doesn't have a major label behind him right now, though he does have an offer from Warner Music that he's not accepted or denied as of this writing. Perhaps old Moz will "pull a Radiohead"?
Ah, Morrissey.
We never know what to expect from this guy, especially since he's recently said he has no further interest in touring for "quite some time," and turned down ridiculous sums of money to reunite the Smiths. I'm not sure why he'd record an album if he wasn't going to tour it... but then again, I'm not sure why Morrissey does a lot of the things he does.
All I know is he's Morrissey, and I like him. As such, any news that proves he's not about to retire or hide away forever is good news in my book.
