Anyone who knows anything about sports knows that "One Shining Moment" is the official theme song of the NCAA Tournament. Every year when the tourney wraps up, a montage of the best plays are put together to the tune of "One Shining Moment."
Well, the NCAA Championship Game is tonight, and that means we're about to get a new montage. But what about the song? Sports Illustrated has suggested updating to a more modern, more fitting tune. And while I agree with this sentiment 100%, I don't think the top ten songs that SI suggested are really that fitting. Take a look...
10. "In The Air Tonite (remix)" by Phil Collins and Lil' Kim - I love this song as much as anyone, but it's about a cheating wife. Is that really the kind of theme song you want? Plus, this is a better song to play before the game, when the lyric "I can feel it coming in the air tonight" really makes sense.
9. "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls - Too lame, sorry.
8. "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba - Besides their one lyric about "pissing the night away," Chumbawamba is best known for being crazy anarchists. Not sure it that's really the best fit for America's Tournament.
7. "Ready to Go" by Republica - Are we having a rave after the game? Cause then this would be perfect.
6. "Right Here, Right Now" by Fatboy Slim - If we're going with a late-90s electronica song, it has to be "Block Rockin' Beats" by the Chemical Brothers. This should be obvious.
5. "Rock n' Roll Part 2" by Gary Glitter - What, "Rock n' Roll Part 1" wasn't good enough for you? Moving along...
4. "Right Now" by Van Halen - I could deal with this, but we would have to flash random words like "Florida," "Ohio State," "3-pointer" and "technical foul" across the screen while the song was playing. I give a lot of credit to the SI writer for including a Crystal Pepsi reference in his description of this song.
3. "Praise You" by Fatboy Slim - Moving along...
2. "Dream On" by Aerosmith - This is a pretty decent call. I've hated Aerosmith ever since Steven Tyler claimed they were better than Zeppelin, but I've always made an exception for this one song. As my friend Dan once said, "it doesn't sound like Aerosmith at all... that's why it's their best song."
1. "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve - "It's a bittersweet symphony, this life. Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to money, then you die." Great lesson for the kids. Actually, this is an amazing song, and I think an instrumental version would be perfect.
So there you go. Despite 6 or 7 questionable picks, I think SI got it right with their #1 choice. Get Richard Ashcroft on the horn and let's make this happen.
