But instead, he kept with it for 12 more years and 6 more studio albums.
After Kurt Cobain's death and the subsequent end of Nirvana, Dave Grohl considered never doing music again.
"When Nirvana was finished I didn't really know what to do. Our lives and our world were turned upside down", he said in a recent interview. "It's hard to imagine playing music after something like that."
That would've been horrible. Dave Grohl is not just an amazing musician; He's also one of the coolest people on Earth. It would've been a shame to not have him around for the past 12 years. And what else would he do? He's a little too long-haired and tatted-up to work at an accounting firm, right?
As some people may know, Grohl had been writing songs back before he was in Nirvana. His eventually return to the studio after Cobain's death was just a test run to record some of this material.
"After Nirvana was finished I spent a lot of time just travelling around and thinking," he says, "and then I thought, 'I know what I will do, I'll book 6 days in the studio and I'll record my favorite 12/13 songs I've ever written.' I never thought I'd still be here doing this, never."
That worked out well. The Foo Fighter's sixth album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, comes out today. So Grohl has been involved with a band that changed the face of music in just a few short years, and a band that has consistently been solid for a dozen years. That's a pretty good resume.
