Since he came from "American Idol," it seemed pretty likely that Chris Daughtry would achieve success in the pop world. Making the finals of "American Idol" is like getting traded to the New England Patriots; regardless of how good you are beforehand, you instantly become a star.
So it's no surprise that Mr. Daughtry has just reached #1 on the VH1 Countdown with his song "Over You." Not only is this song better than Daughtry's previous two efforts ("Home" and "It's Not Over"), but it's also a strong Modern Rock Video Hall of Fame candidate.
But I'm not here to talk about "Over You." I want to discuss Daughtry's brand new single, "Crashed." Daughtry is a big star, but he's always lacked a little bit of street-cred with rock fans because of the whole "American Idol" thing. I have a plan for him to gain back that credibility. "Crashed" came out a few weeks ago, and it's currently #32 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Having heard this song many times, I'm convinced it would've been a huge rock hit if it were released by Live/Collective Soul/Silverchair/Candlebox/Soul Asylum/etc in 1995. I don't know how well the song will do this year, but if Daughtry can eventually get onto classic rock radio stations, his future will be bright. If people in the year 2030 listen to "Crashed" mixed in with a bunch of classic rock songs, they're going to think the song was released in the mid-90s and assume Daughtry is one of those late-grunge-era bands. From a street-cred standpoint, that's got to be better than associating him with "American Idol," right? Chris might want to start wearing flannel in his videos and referencing things like the O.J. trial in his lyrics. It's time to think long-term.
(By the way, I'm sure Daughtry is really crying himself to sleep over lack of "street cred.")
