I do love me some YouTube, if only because it allows me to catch up on all the TV that I never remember to watch. Late night talk shows? Come on... they compete with Adult Swim. I manage to program the DV-R if it's Say Anything or My Chemical Romance, but other than that? It's a tough one for me. But I digress. The Cobras threw their fangs up [and put on some strange clothes] to perform on "Jimmy Kimmel Live' earlier this week. They even did my favorite song off Viva La Cobra, the world's catchiest song, "Guilty Pleasure." So why am I confused?
That's why.
What is going on in this song? You can't hear Victoria at all, Gabe is a bit off on a lot of the vocals... Ryland is the only one who really sounds good. The performance's camp, I can deal with -- it's pretty clear that Gabe was playing it up big time being on TV. That said... do they always sound like that live?
I'd also like to know why Ryland plays the keyboard to open the song, rather than Victoria, who is just standing there, awkwardly, waiting to bust out the keytar. It's just confusing for me... could she not play that part or something?
Ah well, everyone's a critic. But I really was surprised by this performance, because I kind of expected more from the band. Since I know a lot of you guys have seen them live, I have a question: are they usually better than this? Or is this pretty much what you get from Cobra Starship when they're not in the studio?
I really hate picking on this band, especially since I recently got over my whole "Snakes on a Plane band" thing and decided this was the best single song of 2007... but this performance wouldn't captivate me all that much if it was the first time I'd heard or seen the band.
I want to end on a positive note, so I'm going to just point out that Ryland's eyes are absolutely gorgeous.
