It has been rumored for awhile now that Britney Spears will be performing at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, which airs this Sunday night at 9 PM. First it was said that Britney would open the show, but now rumor is she'll close the ceremony with a performance of her new single, "Gimme More," as well as the brand-new unreleased song "Cry." It is also said that Britney will get some help from illusionist Criss Angel.
Because of Britney's recent behavior, many people feel that this performance is a tremendously important moment in her career. Luckily for Spears, MTV performances are where she shines. Here are Britney's most memorable MTV performances. OK, so it's pretty much just all of Britney's MTV performances, but hey, they're all classics. In fact, you could argue that these are the four most memorable moments of Britney's career (not counting the off-the-stage stuff, of course).
1999 "...Baby One More Time" - This one appears pretty tame by today's standards, but it's tough to explain how great it was at the time. Remember, we were coming off an era that included dudes in flannel who hadn't showered in weeks, followed by boy bands and Limp Bizkit. Visually, this was a nice change of pace.
2000 "Satisfaction"/"Oops!... I Did It Again" - About a minute in, just as you're wondering why the hell Britney Spears is wearing a suit and ruining a Stones classic, the music kicks in and one of the greatest outfits ever worn is unleashed on society.
2001 "I'm a Slave 4 U" - All you have to say is "The Snake" and everyone between 20-30 knows exactly what you're talking about.
2002 "Like a Virgin" - The infamous lesbian kiss with Madonna. Everyone always wonders why the Britney-Madonna kiss was hyped up and the Aguilera-Madonna kiss got no attention. It's because the MTV cameras missed most of the Aguilera kiss while they were busy capturing Justin Timberlake's "yeah, I hit that" mug shot.
