Following the NME Awards in London last night, a driver managed to crash into Vampire Weekend's drummer, Chris Thompson. Unfortunately, he was injured in the accident. Chris is currently in the Royal London Hospital for a head injury, and the extent of his injuries are not known at this point.
The thing about this story, which isn't really funny at all, is the British way of putting things. The NME reported the story as, "band member knocked over by car in London." It just sounds so much nicer than "hit," "run over," or other American ways of saying it. "Ah, see, he was just knocked over.. not a big deal..." I think that's part of my generalized fascination with British culture. It's always vaguely polite on some level; there's an eloquence that we simply don't have in America.
But you know, I just keep thinking this could have been avoided if only they didn't drive on the wrong side of the road over there. Has anyone considered that correcting the people's understanding of how roads work, people wouldn't be getting knocked over by cars all the time? USA! USA! USA!
Seriously, though, here's hoping Chris is okay and makes a full and speedy recovery.
In case you haven't heard Vampire Weekend, check out this video for "A-Punk." I really like this band, and feel like they have a good year ahead of them, despite the rather depressing way this article came into existence.
