The band has been working on a new album, which the three current members of the band -- Scott Ian, Charlie Benante, and Frank Bello -- say is the band's "most metal record." The only problem? They don't have a singer. They came close to taking on Slipknot/Stone Sour's Corey Taylor as the vocalist, after he begged them to "let him figure it out." They balked initially because he's in two full-time bands, but gave in because he was so passionate about the position. But as it turns out, he just couldn't do it. So where does this leave Anthrax?
In a pretty weird place. They have a bunch of songs written. Corey Taylor began writing some lyrics for the songs, even, as they all thought there would be time to record the album and tour between Stone Sour and Slipknot tours. But Stone Sour ended up touring longer than anticipated, and Slipknot's next album got pushed up, meaning it was impossible to do it.
The band is having a hard time finding the right person because of the songs they have written. They need someone who fits with their vision, which is rather specific. They said they want it to be the right album to follow We've Come For You All, but "heavier, faster, hookier."
That said, since the band doesn't have a label right now, either, they're taking their time. They said they are fine-tuning their songs while looking for the right singer.
Good luck to them; A lot of bands fold when they lose their lead singers, but these guys want to carry on. And they have the patience to find the right fit for the band and the music, rather than just going with the first guy to come along. You have to figure there are tons of guys who want to be the singer of Anthrax, and be a part of a legendary band. It would probably be easy enough to find a singer. But they want the singer. Respect and good luck to them on that... because the right guy has some pretty big shoes to fill.
