There's "American Idol" for pop, there's "The Next Great American Band" and "Rock Star: Fill in the Band" for rock, there's... umm... "Celebrity Rap Superstar" for rap. But until now, there was no talent show solely for country musicians. Or maybe there was. I can't remember. It's impossible to keep up with every bad reality show that comes out these days. Regardless, there is a new reality show for country fans called "Can You Duet?" The show will air on CMT and will pair up contestants for duets in a quest to find the most talented unsigned singer who hasn't already appeared on a different reality show. In other words, there will be four guys on the show.
FremantleMedia, the company behind "American Idol" and "America's Got Talent," will produce the show. FremantleMedia's chief creative officer says:
We're looking for the next Johnny Cash and June Carter, the next Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, the next Big & Rich or the Judds.
You're probably thinking to yourself, "how many of these talent competition shows can they possibly put on TV?" You're right, it seems like the networks are flooded with talent shows lately, much in the same way that "Survivor"-style reality shows dominated the airwaves in the early 00s. While it may seem like time to move on to another type of show, I have some bad news for you: There are still plenty of competitions, musical or otherwise, that haven't been made into a TV show yet. Including...
-A drumming talent show
-A bass playing talent show
-A roadie talent show
-A groupie talent show (would probably have to be on HBO)
-An ironing & laundry folding competition show
-A school bus driving competition show
-A cooking competition where contestants can only use a microwave, hot plate or Foreman Grill ("College Cook-Off")
-A paper airplane building and throwing competition show
-A mini-Nerf basketball competition show
-An Acey-Deucey competition
-A talent show to see who can create the best talent show
That's just the tip of the iceberg. I've got plenty more ideas, but the networks will have to pony up some cash if they want to hear those. So yeah, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but these talents shows aren't going anywhere. If you don't like them, now might be a good time to get DVR.
