Idol: The Musical has shut down after just one day, due to lack of sales.
A preview version of the musical had been running in various cities since July 5th. The show started in Syracuse, NY, with tickets going for $60 apiece. The entire 10 person cast was replaced at the end of July, and the musical opened off-Broadway in New York City on August 12th. The next day, it was canceled. Producer Todd Ellis said the closing was "due to a lack of advance ticket sales, a lack of positive feedback from audience members and critics and a lack of sustainable financial resources."
So the ticket sales were terrible, the acting sucked, the critics hated it, and the overhead was too high to begin with. But other than that, it was great!
Idol: The Musical was a satirical look at the contestants that tried out for "American Idol" and the show's fanbase. You would think, with the success of the show, that the musical could last at least a few months. C'mon... even Ruben Studdard is still going.
