Albums

Bon Jovi has the #1 album in the land this week. The band sold 292,000 copies of Lost Highway to beat out the White Stripes. Of course, Bon Jovi cheated by making a country album, thus ensuring that everyone in Tennessee and New Jersey would buy it.

The White Stripes -- featuring new Nashville resident Jack White -- came in second with Icky Thump, the band's best chart position to date. Toby Keith slips from the top spot down to #4, which still makes him a Bigger-Than-Average Dog Daddy. Brad Paisley takes third place this week with 5th Gear.

Country music is taking over. You know the classic phrase "The South will rise again?" It's on, baby.

Singles

One. That's how many new songs we have on the Singles Chart this week. The Plain White T's and T-Pain switched positions at #4 & #5, and Fabolous replaced Lil Mama at the #10 spot. Other than those slight adjustments, absolutely nothing changed this week.

Let's move along...

The summer is officially here, and the race for 2007's Annoying Summer Anthem is on. In accordance with American tradition, each summer, one song must be overplayed to the point of absurdity, so that kids can one day look back and say, "Oh yeah, 2004... I think that was the summer I got hammered and vomited on Nicole Fox... Oh, and that fucking Afroman song was on every 5 minutes." Right now, Rihanna is the front-runner with "Umbrella," but I'm calling an upset. Umbrellas aren't really the type of thing people want to think about when thinking of summer. Plus, the song is too good. I have a feeling a new contender is about to emerge very soon. Just watch. Gwen Stefani's next single is going to be pretty annoying, but will it come out soon enough, or will Gwen wait until half the summer has slipped away? And what about Fergie? Surely she's earned a mention in this category by now. But on her new single, she displays a good singing voice. That's hardly a quality you want on an Annoying Summer Anthem. I'm putting my money on a dark horse candidate named Kat Deluna, whose new half-reggaeton, half-pop song "Whine Up" has all the elements of a truly annoying Summer Anthem. Yep, that gal has the right stuff to succeed. There are just so many questions that need to be sorted out over the next couple of months. Hopefully someone will step up to the plate and release an overplayed summer-themed load of crap. Because this is the time when legends are made.

Whatever singer takes the reigns and releases the Annoying Summer Anthem of 2007, I know I'll be listening. And so will everyone else. Seriously. You'll have no choice. That shit will be all over the place.
