The Spice Girls have released a tracklisting for the group's upcoming DVD. While searching for this tracklisting on the Spice Girls' website, I came across something much more interesting. In the "News" section of the girls' website, there's an article on the definition of a pop star. Check out these excerpts...
Real pop stars are more than just popular; they are barometers for an era, providing the images for the world's memories of a particular time.
Music snobs might sniff at the comparison to the Fab Four but all those Beatles dolls, Beatles annuals and movies that made John, Paul, George and Ringo such omnipotent beings in the 1960s were re-created in the 1990s with just as much fervour around Emma, Geri, Mel B, Melanie C and Victoria.
Real pop stars can do their stuff on stage and on record, but they are also unique, entertaining, fun and hold the attention of the whole world just by being themselves.
There have not been many, but the The Spice Girls qualify with ease.
Well, the Beatles comparison might be a little overblown, but they do have a point. We remember groups, artists and genres that transcend music and became pop culture icons. We remember the Beatles and the Stones, Saturday Night Fever and disco, hair metal, grunge, boy bands... and yes, the Spice Girls. We don't remember all of these in the best way, but we do remember them.
If you think about the acts that are around right now, who will we remember in 20 years? It'll be artists like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce, who had a cultural impact in addition to just releasing music. And certainly some indie/underground bands will get their due credit over time, but it's a pretty safe bet that we'll remember the artists that were embedded in our pop culture.
Now the question is this: Will memories of the Spice Girls from 1996 be enough to make people care about them in 2007? The group is releasing a new single called "Headlines" in November; it should be interesting to see how it does.
