The judge in the case granted prosecutors' request for Remy's bail to be set at $250,000. The rapper, (whose real name is Reminisce Smith), was allowed to have her manager put up his house as collateral and was released from New York's Riker's Island jail last night.
Details in the shooting have begun to come to light thanks in part to an interview Barnes-Joseph gave the New York Daily News from her bed at St. Vincent's hospital where she is still listed in stable condition:
All I heard was the gun go off. I couldn't believe she shot me! What hurts me is that when she shot me she went over and dumped the bag. She didn't even say, "Oh, my God, I just shot her." That's what hurt me so much.
Before the shooting Remy reportedly discovered $3,000 missing from her purse and had apparently accused Barnes-Joseph of taking it. The two were celebrating a mutual friend's birthday party and had left shortly before 4 a.m. on Saturday. According to Barnes-Joseph, Remy got in her Escalade, noticed the money was missing and confronted her in her own Nissan Maxima, where the shooting took place.
As reported earlier, the rapper is accused of then getting back in her SUV and driving for a few blocks before crashing it and proceeding in a cab. She turned herself in on Saturday night after police had announced she was wanted earlier in the day.
It goes without saying that this story raises many questions -- about firearms laws, rapper's public and private personas, drunk driving, a bar where you can apparently also get pizza, etc. -- but one rises to the top above the rest. With a government name like Reminisce Smith, why on earth would you feel the need to come up with a rap name?
Seriously Ms. Smith? Own that shit.
