Hey everyone. Welcome to Tom's Modern Rock Pick of the Week. I'm going to share one recommendation from the world of Modern Rock each week, whether it be a song, an album, a new band, or whatever. When I have no recommendations for that week, I'll honor something from the 90s, complain about the Buffalo Bills, or just skip this completely and hope no one notices.
Let's get started. My first recommendation is a strong one, and it's the new Alter Bridge album, Blackbird. If you like Modern Rock, there's no reason you shouldn't like this CD. Songs 1-8 are outstanding, and the rest of the album is pretty solid as well. The title track is an 8-minute epic, and there are at least 6 songs on the album that could be singles. The actual single, "Rise Today," doesn't crack the top five songs on the album. My favorite song on the disc is called "Buried Alive." Sadly it's not available on YouTube, but if you're crafty enough I'm sure you can find it somewhere (legally of course). I honestly have no complaints about this CD, except that some of the band members used to be in Creed and "Arms Wide Open" is the worst song ever. But even that proximity to Creed can't change the fact that this is an impressive album. It's much better than the group's previous effort, One Day Remains, which I thought was pretty decent. I could go into a extended review, but the bottom line is, Blackbird is a great straight-up rock album in an era where few great straight-up rock albums exist. And it sounds nothing like Creed.
Here is the single, "Rise Today."
Here is the first song off the CD, "Ties That Bind." This sets the tone for the album's upbeat, hard rock sound.
If you like those, check out "Buried Alive," "Blackbird," "Before Tomorrow Comes" and "Brand New Start." Or just buy the album, it's worth the $7.99 (you gotta love those Best Buy prices).
And finally, because I named this Pick of the Week, I felt obligated to include the cheesiest pick-related video of all-time. Enjoy...
