At this point, it's tough to not be sick of the Plain White T's song "Hey There Delilah." The song was a monster hit this summer, and gained constant airplay on radio, TV, online, at the supermarket, and everywhere else with the capability to play music. It even knocked Rihanna's "Umbrella" off its perch at the top of the charts, which was no easy task.
Turns out the band is getting a little sick of the song, too.
"You'll always get a kick out of hearing it on the radio," said guitarist Dave Tirio, "but it's no longer like, `Wow!' We're definitely ready for the next one."
The band will be releasing "Our Time Now" as its next single off the Every Second Counts album. They'll also be joining the Young Wild Things tour with Fall Out Boy and Gym Class Heroes.
Tirio had some other interesting comments in the same interview, saying that the band isn't making much money yet, and that they didn't ever expect "Hey There Delilah" to be a hit. He said:
For years, labels will tell you over and over again that for modern rock radio, you have to go for the guys with big guitars and aggressive sounds. They say the girls will come naturally. That girls like cute guys in bands, even ugly guys in bands. But the song that gets us somewhere on the map is the most pansy, girly acoustic song. It shows you how much labels know.
Wow, is that really how record labels think? That's not giving females too much credit. Who's running their label, Al Bundy? That said, I never liked "Hey There Delilah" and I always thought their (louder/more aggressive) song "Hate" was underrated. So maybe the label is right. Anyway, here's what I want to know: When the Plain White T's record their next album, are they going to pull a Sugar Ray and try to replicate their massive breakthrough hit? Will the next Plain White T's album include a song called "Hello There Olivia" or "What's Up There Julie" or something similar? My money's on yes.
