Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19 every year to mark the date in 1865 that Union General Gordon Granger took Texas' Galveston Island and emancipated the community's slaves.

According to Wikipedia (Which provided background for this whole post. Get familiar!), the holiday is currently celebrated in fourteen states.

Tomorrow, Amnesty International, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Hip Hop Caucus and the Congressional Progressive Congress will hold a Juneteenth celebration in Washington, D.C. with the Shut it Down -- Stop the Torture concert.

According to AllHipHop.com, organizers hope to use the show to raise awareness about contemporary abuses of human rights and habeas corpus. The show will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club.

Rapper Mystic will also perform.
