Crunk, the term that was first a convenient shortening of crazy and drunk and later used to describe a complete genre of dirty south hip hop, has made its way to the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Like college kids will ever have to look that one up.
The new edition of the reference book will go on sale as the kids are getting ready to head back to school next month and will feature about 100 new words in total next month. Also included in the class of 2007 are "IED," "ginormous" and "tele novela."
Crunk will go into the book with the following official definition (via MTV): "a style of Southern rap music featuring repetitive chants and rapid dance rhythms." I think they forgot the part about Lil Jon screaming affirmations over laser gun samples.
Now, if I may Merriam-Webster dudes: you're a little late on this. Contrary to what Jon spent what looks to be about $100,000 proclaiming to our right, crunk hasn't had much cultural cachet since late 2005.
Doesn't everyone on the selection committee remember the first time they heard "Laffy Taffy" and realized that snap music had replaced crunk as the flavor of the week? No? Well, just fast track "hyphy" and holler at us next summer.
Until then, we'll always have Lil Scrappy and the first half of '05. Ah memories...
